UN General Assembly passes resolution on human rights defenders
The 3rd committee of the General Assembly last week passed a resolution on human rights defenders which was adopted adopted by consensus – after excellent leadership from Norway, who led the negotiations.
OIDHACO: All Irish MEPs ask the European Union to immediately suspend FTA negotiations with Colombia
• In a letter to the EU Commissioner Catherine Ashton, they stress that “it must be made clear to the Colombian authorities that the EU and its Member States do not condone the current human rights situation in Colombia”.
• They propose that the EU investigate this serious situation and labour rights in Colombia
• Last week in the European Parliament the European Commission’s negotiations with Colombia were severely criticised
IPS: Less Torture, More Impunity

BOGOTÁ, Nov 13 (IPS) - The number of cases of torture attributed to the armed forces in Colombia increased 80 percent from 2003 to 2008, in a context of near total impunity for such crimes. However, the number of documented torture cases overall fell 43.5 percent, compared to the 1998-2003 period.
