Guatemala: Major development projects in Chiquimula

Inb’u’tz ch’uyujk’in tunorox (Good afternoon to you all) Chiquimula is located in the south east of Guatemala close to the Honduran border. In August 2009 it was identified as the country’s second most violent department, with 99 murders registered between January and June. In the executive summary of the Human Rights Ombudsman’s Verified Annual Report for 2009, Chiquimula is named as a centre for drug trafficking, with emphasis on the activities of the Mexican ‘Zetas’ cartel in the area.

2010 RFK Human Rights Award to champion of Mexico's indigenous and peasant communities

Washington DC, September 23, 2010 – Mr. Abel Barrera Hernandez, the founder and Director of the Tlachinollan Human Rights Center of the Montaña in Guerrero, Mexico will receive the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award for his determined efforts to end human rights abuses resulting from military impunity and narco-violence.

PBI Mexico: Raid on Juan Manuel Martinez Moreno's house

Juan Manuel Martínez Moreno has once again been the victim of intimidation; his house in Santa Cruz Xoxocotlán, Oaxaca was raided on the 24th September 2010. Martínez Moreno and his family have been subject to harassment and surveillance since his release from jail in February 2010. In response, they have requested precautionary measures from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights to guarantee their safety.
