PBI Global Strategic Plan 2025–2030

PBI Global Strategic Plan 2025–2030

Defending the Future: Our New Global Vision for Peace and Protection

For over four decades, PBI has supported and accompanied human rights defenders worldwide. As global challenges grow more complex — from the climate crisis to conflicts and shrinking civic space — our mission has never been clearer: to protect those who protect others.

Building on 40 years of solidarity

Through this new plan, PBI will:

🌐 Sustain and scale up our holistic protective accompaniment of defenders, including in new geographies.
🤝 Work with allies to enhance deterrence and prevent perpetrators from attacking activists.
👥 Strengthen the global movement by bringing defenders together to share strategies and learnings.
💭 Share our resources, providing defenders with the tools, tactics, and capacity to keep themselves safe and strong.
Strengthen our internal processes, fostering efficiency and promoting care.

“The future depends on the courage of defenders — and on our shared responsibility to stand with them.” – PBI Global Secretariat

Stories of hope and resilience

Each of these stories shows the courage and hope that drive our mission forward.

Colombia: The Peace Community of San José de Apartadó, founded in 1997 during the height of Colombia’s armed conflict, rejects the presence of armed groups and works to protect both its environment and the rights of those who call it home, building deterrence as a model of peaceful resilience.

Nicaragua: Red de Mujeres Pinoleras (REMUPI): Founded by Nicaraguan refugees in Costa Rica, they help women who have fled to their homes build emotional and financial stability, while continuing to fight for the rights of those who have chosen to remain in Nicaragua.

Kenya: Mothers of Victims and Survivors Network: an initiative documenting extrajudicial executions, enforced disappearances, police brutality, and other abuses by law enforcement. The group also unites victims’ families through meetings and vigils and encourages them to speak out about their experiences.

Nepal: Madhesh Human Rights Home (Mahuri Home): grassroots organisation protecting the rights of marginalised and minority communities in Nepal. They promote evidence-based advocacy, build the capacity of human rights defenders, and create vital platforms such as the Minority Rights Protection Forum. They also promote gender-responsive policies and mobilise champions to monitor and report human rights violations.

A global movement, united

PBI is more than an organisation; it’s a movement. Across continents, volunteers, staff, and partners are working side by side to protect space for civil society and build lasting peace.
